The places of memory

In the footsteps of the High Places of Memory

The Hauts-de-France region was the international epicenter of the Great War. Very early on, the Somme and then the Nord-Pas de Calais highlighted the memorial heritage, a witness to the fighting, with three dimensions: civic, international relations and territorial attractiveness.

Immersion...

Living the story

In the heart of the Hauts-de-France region, the importance of these traces, both by their number and their representative strength, give Artois a special situation.
Thus, between Loos-en-Gohelle and Serre-les-Puisieux, there are 13 of the 36 major sites of the First World War of the Paths of Memory. Lens-Liévin Tourism and Arras Pays d’Artois Tourism have created an international destination for remembrance tourism related to the Great War, based on the strength and coherence of the memorial offer they share. Between Somme 14-18 and Flanders, “Hills and plains of Artois 14-18” thus takes a central place in the attractiveness related to the memory of the First World War on the Western Front.
