Pioneers of the duty to remember, the soldiers of the Great War were the first heroes of their fallen brothers in arms. In all weathers, in the violence, the noise and often in the confusion of this conflict, many soldiers were buried by their comrades directly at the front.

In the aftermath of the world conflict, the question arose as to the fate of these hundreds of thousands of bodies to be buried in dignified graves. The financial means, the weight of tradition and the political decisions of each country had a great influence on the design of national military cemeteries.
